When you feel like crying.
Release Date: July 20, 2016
Starring: Gong Yoo, Ma Dong Seok, Jung Yu Mi, Ahn So Hee, Choi Woo Shik
Genre: Zombie horror
Plot Summary: A chemical leak causes a zombie outbreak in South Korea. It spreads quickly and one of the infected boards a train, where she bites a passenger and the outbreak spreads from car to car within minutes. Among the few surviving passengers is an extremely selfish father, traveling with his daughter. He has little regard for other people, but that begins to change as everyone has to work together to make it to Busan alive.
Favorite Scene: It's almost impossible to choose a favorite scene because most of the time I was watching this movie was spent sobbing uncontrollably. So I'm going to have to go with the zombie "wave" on the train towards the beginning of the film.
Notable Trivia: No guns are fired throughout the entire film.
Final Thoughts: Train to Busan is an exceptional film, and one of the few zombie movies I've seen and loved. It's so different from other zombie movies because it's not just about action and shooting things. You end up really caring about these characters and worrying about their safety and it's absolutely heartbreaking to see them die. The cast is phenomenal. I knew most of them from K-dramas I had seen before (Gong Yoo was in Coffee Prince, Jung Yu Mi was in I Need Romance 2012 and Ma Dong Seok was in Shut Up Flower Boy Band). 2016 was a big year for Gong Yoo, starring in Train to Busan and Goblin (to this day, one of the highest rated K-dramas of all time). I cannot recommend Train to Busan enough, both for its amazing story and incredible cast (Choi Woo Shik went on to start in the Oscar winner Parasite). There is a sequel to this film, Peninsula. Skip it. Seriously. It's nothing like Train to Busan and I wouldn't even know they were connected if the marketing team didn't say they were. There's also an animated prequel, Seoul Station, that's grittier, but it's definitely worth watching.
