Salem Haunted Happenings
Salem is a beautiful town filled with museums, candlelight tours and a history of witches and pirates. Visiting in October, when all the leaves on the trees in New England have begun to change colors, is the perfect time of year and Salem has so many extra events to offer in the weeks leading up to Halloween.
I've been to Salem three times and I love it. I've seen all the museums, I've been to the cemeteries, I've walked through the haunted houses, I've been to the House of the Seven Gables, I've done the walking tours and a haunted hearse tour, I've seen every location Giles Corey supposedly haunts...All of that is great, I highly suggest stopping at as many museums as you possibly can and doing at least one walking tour at night. But I thought I would go through the list of events occurring on specific days and give a few recommendations.
October 1st:
- The Salem Psychic Fair & Witches' Market - Happening various days throughout October, here you can shop from various vendors and have your fortune told by practicing psychics and witches.
October 3rd
- Salem Horror Fest - October 3rd through the 13th, enjoy film screenings for classics such as The Thing, Frankenstein, Trick r' Treat, The Bride of Frankenstein, Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown and The Invisible Man. Also includes lectures and a live podcast.
October 4th
- Salem Haunted Magic Show Presents Hysteria: Ghost Stories - This is another recurring program, aimed at younger children.
- Lanterns in the Village - Pumpkins, storytelling and hot cocoa. There's no suggested age range as of right now.
- Haunted Dinner Theater Presents Clue Live - Recurring, enjoy a live production of Clue while you eat at the Hawthorne Hotel.
October 5th
- Haunted Biz Baz Street Fair - If you enjoy music and street fairs and being outside in the Fall weather, this is a great even for you to attend.
October 11th
- Creative Collective Merchant Marketplace - This recurring fair is the biggest of Salem's Halloween season.
October 12th
- Howl-o-ween Pet Costume Parade - In addition to an adorable parade of pets dressed up in various costumes (that they hopefully aren't uncomfortable in), there will be information about local rescue organizations and pet-focused businesses.
October 16th
- Wicked Wednesdays at the Phillips House - This is a recurring family event where you can partake in games, crafts and a tour of the house.
October 17th
- The Great Salem Pumpkin Walk - Explore the downtown district to see the pumpkin displays. Also includes activities and entertainment.
October 19th
- Tales at the Witch House - This one also doesn't have a recommended age range, so bring children at your own discretion.
October 25th
- Hawthorne Hotel's 29th Annual Halloween Ball: The H Files: Alien Invasion - "The biggest costume contest in Salem."
- The Official Salem Witches' Halloween Ball - Located in the Grand Ballroom at the Hawthorne Hotel, there will be music, gift bags for the first 100 guests to arrive, psychic readings, magic rituals and a costume contest.
October 26th
- Nosferatu (1922) with Live Organ Music - I'm not the biggest fan of Dracula, but I love German Expressionism, so I have to recommend this film anyway. And the chance to see it with live music? Who could pass that up?
- Wicked Night on the Wharf Costume Ball - In case you missed the other costume contests, here's another one!
- Olde Salem Village Dark Arts Night Faire - Experience a fair after the sun sets. Vendors, live performances, ghost stories and cider.
- Laurie Cabot & the Cabot Kent Hermetic Temple Witches Costume Ball 2019 - Celebrate Halloween with Salem's most famous witch, Laurie Cabot.
October 31st
- Halloween Finale Fireworks - Watch fireworks over the North River, a beautiful way to end Halloween.
